The Wild Side Series: Kwiaht: Wildfire Management

Wildfires have been rare in the islands for over a thousand years, thanks to our humid climate and extensive clearing of underbrush by Coast Salish villagers setting small controlled fires.  For almost a century logging and sheep kept much of our landscape open. But since the 1940s forests have regrown, potential ladder fuels have accumulated, and now our summers are getting longer and drier.  Are the rainshadow islands heading for the kinds of wildfires that destroyed much of southern California and eastern Washington last year? Is there anything we can do to make our islands less fire prone, other than preemptive burning?

Simplified Forms - David Ridgway & Pete Kuentzel

David Ridgway & Pete Kuentzel

Free to the Public

06/15/18 – 07/13/18

Simplified Forms

David Ridgway - Paintings
Pete Kuentzel - Ceramic Sculpture
This gallery show brings together painter David Ridgway and ceramicist Pete Kuentzel. While both artists use seemingly simple forms--a rectangle, a triangle or a circle-- they create lush, complex compositions on canvas or clay.
David has a unique approach with landscapes: he initially removes any signs of present day, like power lines or cell towers. Then, he simplifies the form and intensifies the color. His skies become heavy white rocks, gliding by a farm barnyard scene without the creatures that inhabit those spaces. Portrayed in rich velvety purples and reds, we now see a bunch of simplified forms that evoke a barnyard.
Pete's approach to his ships and tankers again use the simplified form of a rectangle, a triangle or a circle to create the form of a ship. A rectangle for the ships stack and a circle for a porthole and perhaps a rectangle for the cargo hold. Pete's color vocabulary is filled with sun drenched yellows, reds and blues.

These artists showcase individual talents (David’s painting and Pete’s ceramic sculptures) while pairing beautifully.
Reception for the artists Friday, June 15th 4-7 pm
Artist Walk Through the show with Pete Kuentzel: Saturday,June 23, 11-1 pm
Artist Walk Through  the show with David Ridgway: Saturday, June 30, 11-1 pm
